Yes. Travel eSIMs reach Chinese networks through roaming agreements with local carriers, so coverage comes from the same towers your phone would use anyway. Two conditions on your side: the phone has to support eSIM, and it has to be carrier-unlocked.

Install before you fly. Downloading an eSIM profile needs a working internet connection, and arranging that at home is far easier than arranging it after you land. The QR code arrives by email; scanning it early does not start the plan on plans whose activation begins on first network connection — check the activation policy on the product page.

It depends on how the plan routes your traffic, and no eSIM can promise that a particular third-party service will work.

Some travel eSIMs carry your data out to the public internet at a location outside mainland China. On those plans, customers generally reach services that are otherwise difficult to use from inside the country. Plans we mark "Works with popular AI services" are the ones whose provider-reported routing is generally more suitable for this.

What we cannot control: the services themselves set their own access rules, account policies and regional restrictions, and those change without notice.

The same logic applies — it comes down to routing rather than to the eSIM itself. A plan that breaks out to the internet outside mainland China generally behaves like a connection from that location.

Treat it as a strong likelihood rather than a guarantee, and do not build a trip around a single service being reachable. If something is critical for work, carry a second way to get to it.

Two different things are happening at once. Your phone connects to a local Chinese network for radio coverage — that is what gives you signal. But the point where your data enters the public internet, often called the breakout, can be somewhere else entirely: Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan or elsewhere.

Many online services decide what you can reach based on that breakout location, not on where your phone physically is. That is why two eSIMs standing on the same street corner can behave very differently.

A rough daily guide: maps, messaging and light browsing run about 300–500MB a day. Add social feeds and photo uploads and it is closer to 1GB a day. Video calls and streaming can double that again.

That works out to roughly 5–10GB for a week and 10–20GB for two weeks. If you plan to tether a laptop, check the plan's hotspot support first — not every plan allows it.

Buying slightly more than you expect to use is usually cheaper than topping up mid-trip.

Look for 5–10GB with at least 10 days of validity. Buying a few days more validity than your trip is deliberate: it absorbs a delayed flight or a changed date without leaving you offline.

Roaming from your home carrier is usually several times more expensive per GB and is billed after the fact, so the cost is only clear when the statement arrives. A travel eSIM is prepaid: you know the price before you leave.

The trade-off is your phone number. Roaming keeps your own number working for calls and SMS; a data eSIM normally gives you data only. The common arrangement is to keep your primary SIM in the phone for calls and let the eSIM carry the data.

Roaming also routes through your home carrier, which is a different routing situation from the breakout locations described above.
