If your travel eSIM is not working, first identify whether the profile failed to install, the line has no signal, or data will not load. Then check destination coverage, validity, the selected data SIM and the provider's settings. Keep the profile installed while troubleshooting, and change one setting at a time so you can track the result.
1. Identify the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Start by checking |
|---|---|
| No travel profile in SIM settings | Installation instructions, device compatibility and the internet connection used for setup |
| Profile installed, but no service | Covered destination, enabled line, activation conditions and available networks |
| Signal bars, but no mobile internet | Selected data SIM, plan-specific roaming or APN instructions, remaining allowance and validity |
| Browser works, but one app fails | That app's settings or service status; the eSIM may already have working data |
| Connection is slow or intermittent | Location, listed network, congestion and any speed or fair-use conditions |
Signal bars alone are not a complete test. On a Dual SIM phone, they might belong to the home line. Open the SIM or cellular settings and identify the travel profile by its label.
2. Check the purchased plan and your current location
Read the supported destinations in the order or product details. A regional name is not a substitute for the country list. If you are testing from a country the plan does not cover, that test cannot confirm its destination service.
Next check the validity trigger, expiry and remaining allowance using the method supplied for your order. A phone's usage counter is useful context, but it is not necessarily the provider's record of what remains. Do not assume a generic app or portal supports every purchased product.
An example: Alex installs a destination plan at home and sees no service. The profile is present, but home is outside the supported countries. That calls for checking the activation rule and testing at the destination, not repeatedly buying or deleting profiles.
3. Confirm which line supplies mobile data
Select the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line and make sure that line is enabled. Review automatic data switching so the phone does not silently fall back to home-line data during your test.
Set data roaming on the travel line according to the provider's instructions. Review the home line separately. Apple's data roaming guidance explains how the roaming control applies to the selected line on a Dual SIM device.
To check whether the travel data is working, temporarily turn Wi-Fi off and load a small webpage. Reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward if you need it to continue troubleshooting. Avoid a large speed test on a limited allowance when a small page will answer the immediate question.
4. Give the connection a fresh attempt
After confirming the plan and line settings, try Airplane Mode on and off, then check the travel line again. If necessary, restart the phone. Apple includes these steps in its eSIM setup troubleshooting guide, along with checking for an available carrier-settings update on iPhone.
Record what happens after each step. Switching several settings together makes it difficult to tell which change helped. If the issue only occurs in one location, try another suitable nearby location before concluding that the profile has failed.
5. Use only the network and APN instructions for your plan
Some troubleshooting instructions refer to an APN, the mobile-data access point setting. Check whether your purchased plan requires a particular value. If none is supplied, ask support before entering values found for another provider online.
The same applies to manual network selection. Use a network specified for the actual plan or follow support's direction. A network appearing in the phone's list does not establish that your plan is permitted to use it.
If the provider specifies automatic settings, follow those instructions. Preserve the original values before any supported change so you can accurately describe what happened.
6. Keep the eSIM installed and contact support
Do not erase the profile as a routine reset. Apple's guidance on erasing an eSIM says not to do so for troubleshooting unless directed by the carrier. A replacement or another installation may require provider assistance.
Send a concise description that helps support reproduce the problem:
- Order reference and exact plan name.
- Phone model, country of purchase and operating-system version.
- Current destination and when the issue began.
- Whether the travel profile is visible and selected for data.
- Exact error wording, plus the checks already completed.
- Screenshots of relevant settings with private identifiers and activation details hidden.
Do not post QR codes, activation codes, account passwords or full payment details in public comments or routine support screenshots. Use the official support channel and follow its secure process if additional information is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have signal but no internet?
The signal may belong to another line, or the travel line may not have usable data. Confirm the selected data SIM, plan validity and allowance, then follow the plan's roaming and APN instructions.
Should I scan the QR code again?
First check whether the profile already appears in Settings. If it does, troubleshoot the installed line. If the code is reported as used or invalid, contact support before another attempt or deleting anything.
Will changing from 5G to 4G fix it?
It is not a universal fix. First verify that the plan, device and location support the service you are trying to use. Follow provider guidance if a different network mode is recommended.
What if only one app does not work?
If other services load using the travel line with Wi-Fi off, focus on the affected app's mobile-data permissions, account requirements or service availability. Report that distinction to support instead of describing the whole eSIM as offline.
Still unable to connect? Contact Trips eSIM support with the information above and keep the installed profile in place while the issue is checked.
