iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max support eSIM, but their SIM options depend on the country or region where the phone is purchased. Apple's US models are eSIM-only. Does iPhone 18 Pro have a physical SIM tray?
The answer depends on the version you buy. This comparison covers three verified purchase markets, rather than every country where Apple sells iPhone.

Do not apply the US specification to every imported iPhone 18 Pro. Before paying a reseller, request the original sales region and exact model number. A product listing that says only “international version” leaves an important question unanswered.
Purchase country and destination are different checks
The purchase country determines which phone variant you receive. The destination determines which coverage you need from your mobile plan. Buying a phone in London does not make a UK-only data package suitable for a holiday in Japan.
Keep these decisions separate when comparing offers:
- Identify the handset. Record its model, purchase market and carrier-lock status.
- List the itinerary. Include countries where you need data during stopovers.
- Match a plan to both. Confirm device suitability and every required destination on the product page.
For example, someone buying a UK iPhone 18 Pro for a France-and-Italy trip should check the UK handset specification, then compare plans that explicitly cover France and Italy. The word “Europe” in a package name is a starting point; the listed countries settle the coverage question.
Mainland China purchases need a different installation plan
Apple identifies mainland China models A3715 and A3718 for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Its current guide limits compatible mainland-purchased phones to two stored eSIMs. Non-mainland carrier eSIMs cannot be installed while located in mainland China; installation abroad requires location services.
If both profile slots are occupied, check the consequences before deleting one: Apple says reactivating a deleted home eSIM requires a carrier-store visit. Plan an arrival connection and ask the travel provider about the exact handset before purchase. Follow Apple's current mainland China instructions.
Check carrier unlock before comparing travel plans
An eSIM-capable phone can still be locked to its original carrier. In Settings → General → About, check Carrier Lock. Apple's unlocking guide says an unlocked phone displays “No SIM restrictions”; only the carrier can remove a carrier lock.
If you are ordering a phone through a carrier offer, resolve the unlock conditions before relying on another provider's data abroad. Send the carrier your intended departure date so that the answer is useful for your actual trip.
Choose travel data around your trip
Once the handset checks are complete, use the Trips eSIM destination directory to compare suitable plans. Review:
- Countries and validity: The plan should cover your itinerary and the whole period you need connectivity.
- Data allowance: Check total or daily data, plus any reduced-speed conditions.
- Installation and activation: Confirm what starts the validity period before deciding when to install.
- Hotspot, calls and SMS: Verify each feature separately when you need it.
A new camera does not create a fixed daily data requirement. Your upload habits matter: saving videos for Wi-Fi and uploading them over mobile data are different budgets. Use your own recent usage in the travel data planning guide.
Keep the installation instructions accessible outside the new phone, and arrange a backup connection for setup. If you keep your home number active, ask that carrier about possible charges; a separate travel data plan does not remove every home-line roaming fee.
